The hematologist deals with hematopoiesis, the disorders of blood cells (white and red blood cells and platelets) as well as with the disorders of the mechanisms that make our blood clot or make our body bleed, i.e. the disorders of hemostasis.

Hemopoiesis: is the most important continuous process that takes place in the human body. It is the process of producing mature blood cells from precursor cell forms. Mature blood cells have a short life span and are not able to divide, so their continuous replacement by hematopoietic organs is necessary. An adult produces about 100 billion cells/day.

Hemostasis: a physiological reaction to local vascular damage, designed to stop bleeding. Hemostasis is divided into primary, the mechanism of coagulation and the mechanism of fibrinolysis.

    Hematologist and Women

Women have a special relationship with the hematologist because at all stages of their life -development, menarche, reproductive age, menopause- the hematological and hemostatic balance changes, adapting to the needs of the organism. Let us not forget that iron deficiency anemia (the most common type of anemia) affects women by a large majority (20:1), while vascular thrombosis after hormone use occurs almost exclusively in women

Hematologists: what they treat and what they do

    They deal with:

    • LEMPHADENE disorders: lymphomas, benign lymphadenitis/ lymph node swellings.
    • Red Cell disorders: i.e. all forms of anemia (drop in hemoglobin and hematocrit) and erythrocytosis (increase in hemoglobin and hematocrit)
    • White Cell Disorders: Leukemias, Myelodysplastic Syndromes and Myelogenous Neoplasms, lymphomas, leukopenia, leukocytosis, multiple myeloma and other plasma cell dyscrasias.
    • PLATELET disorders: thrombocytopenia, thrombocytosis, thrombocytopenic purpura.
    • COAGULATION disorders: hypercoagulability, thrombosis, bleeding tendencies, thrombophilia, other coagulation and fibrin dissolution (fibrinolysis) disorders.
    • BLOOD DONATION-TRANSFUSION THERAPY

    Medical specialties related to hematology

A hematologist is a doctor who is closely linked to other specialties in medical practice. You can visit the hematologist directly and indirectly (or he/she may be asked to assess you) after being advised by gynecologists, oncologists, cardiologists, surgeons and other specialties, since blood is a tissue that affects ALL human systems.

    Services at the GENESIS Clinic

Dr. Emmanuel Papadakis – Hematologist, with more than 20 years of experience, is at Genesis Clinic in charge of:

    • Medical visit for hematology-hemostasis issues
    • Thrombophilia screening-assessment and thrombophilia carrier guidance
    • Treatment of venous thrombosis and pulmonary embolism (prevention, long-term follow-up)
    • Monitoring-management of pregnancy under anticoagulation, high risk of thrombosis and vascular complications
    • Investigation of hematological pathology by myelogram, bone marrow biopsy, karyotype and molecular techniques
    • Carrying out transfusions on indication
    • Monitoring of iron deficiency and administration of intravenous iron in the short-stay hospital
